DC Power Supply

Model 121 Programmable DC Current Source

  • 7 decades of output current, selectable in 13 steps
  • Programmable current output, 100 nA to 100 mA
  • Low-noise output
  • Large 3-digit LED display
  • Simple user interface
  • Current reversal feature
  • USB interface enables integration with automated test systems
  • DIN panel-mountable package, detachable output terminal block

The Model 121 programmable DC current source is a CE-marked precision instrument suitable for bench-top use or panel-mounted operation in labs, test facilities, and manufacturing environments. It provides a low-noise, highly stable source of current up to 100 mA, with convenient manual selection through 13 pre-set output levels, each representing a ten-fold change in power when attached to a resistive load. A "user" setting allows the current output to be defined anywhere within the operating range of the unit, from 100 nA to 100 mA.

Programmable operation is also possible via the instrument's USB computer interface, through which the Model 121 can be commanded to output any desired current at any time. Thus, application-specific test currents can be driven from an external PC.

The instrument operates at 5 VDC, and power is supplied by the external AC wall-mount supply provided with the standard Model 121. The supply will automatically conform to any AC line voltage ranging from 100 VAC to 240 VAC, 50 or 60 Hz.

Superconducting Magnet Power Supply

Model 625 Superconducting Magnet Power Supply

  • 60 A / 5 V, bipolar, true 4-quadrant output
  • 0.1 mA output setting resolution
  • Linear regulation minimises noise
  • Ripple = 0.007% of maximum current (into a 1 mO load)
  • 1 mA per hour stability
  • Parallel operation to ±120 A

The Model 625 Superconducting Magnet Power Supply is the ideal supply for small to medium sized superconducting magnets used in high sensitivity materials research applications. The Model 625 is a practical alternative to both the larger, one size fits all, superconducting magnet supplies and the endless adaptations of generic power supplies. By limiting output power, Lake Shore was able to concentrate on the performance requirements of the most demanding magnet users. The resulting Model 625 provides high precision, low noise, safety, and convenience.

Precision in magnetic measurements is typically defined as smooth continuous operation with high setting resolution and low drift. Achieving these goals while driving a challenging load, such as a superconducting magnet, requires a unique solution. The Model 625 delivers up to 60 A at a nominal compliance voltage of 5 V, with the supply acting as either a source or a sink in true 4-quadrant operation. Its current source output architecture with analogue control enables both smooth operation and low drift. A careful blending of analogue and digital circuits provides high setting resolution of 0.1 mA and flexible output programming.

Lake Shore chose linear input and output power stages for the moderate 300 W output of the Model 625. Linear operation eliminates the radiated radio frequency (RF) noise associated with switching power supplies, allowing the Model 625 to reduce the overall noise in its output and the noise radiated into surrounding electronics.

Safety should never be an afterthought when combining stored energy and liquid cryogens in a superconducting magnet system. The Model 625 incorporates a variety of hardware and firmware protection features to ensure the safety of the magnet and supply. For improved operator safety, the power supply was also designed for compliance with CE mark safety requirements, including both the low voltage directive and the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) directive.

Instrument users have come to rely on Lake Shore for convenience and ease of use. The Model 625 includes the features necessary to conveniently manage a superconducting magnet, such as a persistent switch heater output, calculated field reading, current ramping, and quench detection. Computer interfaces are also integrated for automation of the magnet system. The Model 625 is truly an excellent one-box solution for controlling a superconducting magnet.

Electromagnet Power Supplies

Model 643 Electromagnet Power Supply

  • Bipolar, linear, true 4-quadrant output
  • ±70 A/±35 V, 2.5 kW
  • Can be modulated to frequencies up to 0.17 Hz at ±70 A
  • Low noise
  • 0.1 mA of programmed current resolution
  • Analogue programming and IEEE-488 and RS-232C interfaces
  • Built-in fault protection
  • Compact design

The Model 643 electromagnet power supply is a linear, bipolar current source providing true 4-quadrant output, eliminating the need for external switching or operator intervention to reverse current polarity. The Model 643 is capable of supplying ±70 A/±35 V to a nominal 0.5 W, 0.5 H load, and the output can be modulated from an external source to frequencies up to 0.17 Hz at ±70 A. Internally programmed output provides 20-bit resolution, while externally programmed output provides unlimited resolution.

The compact, low noise design of the Model 643 makes it the ideal supply for use in laboratory settings. When combined with a Lake Shore EM4 4-inch electromagnet and Model 475 DSP gaussmeter, the Model 643 provides a versatile field control system ideal for a wide range of user defined applications. These include but are not limited to magneto-optical, magnetic hysteresis and susceptibility, and Hall effect measurements, as well as in-line annealing.

Model 648 Electromagnet Power Supply

  • Bipolar, linear, 4-quadrant output
  • ±135 A/±75 V, 9.1 kW
  • Can be modulated to frequencies up to 0.17 Hz at ±135 A
  • Low noise
  • 1 mA of programmed current resolution
  • Analogue programming and IEEE-488 and USB interfaces
  • Built-in fault protection

The Model 648 electromagnet power supply is a robust, fault-tolerant 9 kW supply optimised for powering large 7 or 10 in research electromagnets. It is specifically designed for high precision laboratory use requiring extremely low electrical noise. The linear design removes undesirable higher frequency noise typical of switch mode power supplies. Eliminating the need for external switching or operator intervention to reverse current polarity, the Model 648 uses convenient bipolar, 4-quadrant operation. It is capable of supplying ±135 A/±75 V to a nominal 0.5 O, 0.57 H load, and the output can be modulated from an external source to frequencies up to 0.17 Hz at ±135 A. The Model 648 is built to last with a rugged design, integrated fault protection, and a simple, clean interior electronic design.

This robust power supply is developed to minimise downtime. It uses worry-free water cooling for quiet efficient operation compared to air-cooled power supplies. The seamless water lines only have external junctions, eliminating internal water leaks. In addition, safety interlocks ensure that cooling water is always flowing to the supply while operating. Magnet water can also be interlocked into the power supply if desired. Internal software controls manage water usage intelligently.

When combined with a Lake Shore EM7 7 in electromagnet and Model 475 DSP gaussmeter, the Model 648 forms a versatile electromagnet characterisation system ideal for a wide range of user defined applications, including magneto-optical studies, magnetic hysteresis tests, susceptibility measurements, Hall effect studies, spin magnetic resonance demonstrations, and biological tests.
