High-intensity LEDs offer bright excitation light and fast switching for simultaneous Na and Ca ion imaging in neurons

William N. Ross, Ph.D., of New York Medical College and the Marine Biological Laboratory, uses imaging techniques to study synaptic integration and plasticity in dendrites. To learn more about the calcium and sodium interactions that take place in neurons, Ross and his colleagues developed a technique for imaging both ion signals in quick succession. Using high intensity LEDs from Prizmatix it was possible to achieve the fast excitation light switching and high signal-to-noise ratios needed to capture small, fleeting changes in fluorescence intensity.
